GOP is Rotting Away

David Brooks wrote an interesting article in the NYT about his beloved Republican Party. Make no mistake this article isn’t the same ole, same ole Republican trite about pulling up boot straps and their mistaken belief that only conservatives know what is best for the rest of us. Brooks now sees what has happened to the GOP and is angry, sad and depressed to the point of hopelessness. Wait a minute, he’s a conservative to the degree of severely just like Mitt Romney,

“Romney told right-wing activists that he had been a “severely” conservative governor.”

yet Brooks feels the same hopelessness we progressive Democrats are feeling with the toxic nature present within the 3 branches of our government. If one staunch Republican (I disliked Brooks way of thinking thoroughly) has finally stopped drinking the GOP koolaid and opened his koolaid hangover eyes to reality, maybe our future won’t be as hopeless and bleak, as we, who can still think, thought. thinkingblue

The G.O.P. Is Rotting

By David Brooks

Excerpt: The Republican Party is doing harm to every cause it purports to serve. If Republicans accept Roy Moore as a United States senator, they may, for a couple years, have one more vote for a justice or a tax cut, but they will have made their party loathsome for an entire generation. The pro-life cause will be forever associated with moral hypocrisy on an epic scale. The word “evangelical” is already being discredited for an entire generation. Young people and people of color look at the Trump-Moore G.O.P. and they are repulsed, maybe forever.

Now watch VICE NEWS video about why Alabamians are so proud of their ignorance and bigotry. UNBELIEVABLE and incredibly sad!

Lest We Forget the Unsung Heroes

Sadly, Bigotry, Hatred and Malice monopolize our humanity even though the types who foster these vile traits are in a minority. When we remain silent, we allow the hatred cancer to metastasize. Thank all that is good, there are people who step away from the maddening crowd and literally risk their lives trying to become a voice for those who have none. Lest we forget, the unsung heroes who have walked among us, unafraid to speak out against injustice and tyranny. thinkingblue

Frankenstein’s Monster Within the GOP

A FB member’s honest opinion about those who voted for Trump and who are now also trying to wiggle out of the embarrassment by calling their Frankenstein, a Democrat.

Thank you, Bruce Lindner
Milwaukie, OR ·
An interesting thing has been happening. I’m sure you’ve noticed it too. The “Never Trump” movement is merging into the mainstream. For those who don’t know who the Never Trumpers are, they’re the Republicans who opposed Trump before, during, after the election, and continue to do so to this day. Republican stalwarts like David Frum, Steve Schmidt, Ana Navarro, Bill Kristol, and Rick Wilson.

Even my Republican pal that I argue with via email is starting to get a little wobbly in his love for Trump. For the past year, he’s been a true believer. He even wears the MAGA hat on his Facebook profile picture. But lately, he says he “wants to look forward,” and not dwell on the Boy Scouts incident, the ObamaCare fiasco, etc. Nothing to see there, after all… just more unpatriotic liberals trying to bring him down. But he finished up with this: “Bruce, I’m surprised at you. I figured you’d be happy to see that Trump’s been replacing all his key people with Democrats.”

And late last night, Joe Scarborough, who until just last month was a lifelong Republican, tweeted this: “There are no Republicans around Donald Trump and why should there be? He supported Hillary and Schumer and was a Democrat until he was 65.”

Not so fast there guys. Donald Trump at his core is neither a Republican or a Democrat. He’s a Trumpian. He’s in it for himself. As for party allegiance, he’s flip-flopped back and forth between them, between the issues, and between the tenets of each party’s agenda for fifty years.

But let’s be clear on this. To my Republican friends, whether true believers or late to the party Never Trumpers, you *own* this man. He’s as connected to you as if he were your Siamese twin. He’s registered as a Republican. He campaigned in the Republican primaries. He participated in the Republican debates. He funneled millions into Republican down-ticket races. He married himself to the Republican Party megaphone, Fox News. He ran AGAINST the Democratic candidate. And on Election Day 2016, a plurality of white, mostly blue-collar, rural, REPUBLICANS elected him. And of the “faith and values” crowd, 80% of them didn’t so much as flinch when it came to pulling the lever for the man who boasted about sexual assault.

So nice try, but no cigar. Donald Trump isn’t just a textbook conservative, he’s one who’s pushed right-wing values to every despot’s fantasy: Fascism. And since fascism is the antipode to liberal ideology, that’s yet more proof that your claim of Trump is secretly left-leaning is absurd on its face.

It’s already been said by some historians that Trump will go down as one of our worst, if not THE worst president ever. (Let’s hope we never endure anyone worse than him). But I’d take it a step further. In my opinion, with the exception of convicted rapists and murderers, etc., he’s one of the worst PEOPLE in American history. He’s as flawed a human being as I can imagine. He’s a textbook sociopath, whose only concern is the welfare of Donald J. Trump.

Yet he was the choice of the party of Lincoln. Go figure.

So what motivated 62M Americans to cast their vote for him? Joe Sixpack: “He’s a multi-millionaire who won’t take any shit from anyone. And he’ll take the gloves off when dealing with our enemies.” That’s just great. The same was true of Meyer Lansky and Frank Costello. Only in their defense, neither of them was a narcissist. Nor were they particularly diplomatic, which is why they entered the line of work they did.

So here’s this man, elected by the far-right wing of the Republican Party, embroiled in multiple scandals right out of the gate, and only now… only NOW we’re seeing cracks in his base. But rather than admitting “Maybe we were wrong about him,” their excuse is “What do you expect? He was never really a Republican.”

No way. You own him. You fucking OWN him. When the Access Hollywood tape was released, you said nothing.
When he mocked a handicapped journalist, you said nothing.
When he called Mexicans “criminals and rapists,” you said nothing.
When he went on a sexist tirade with Megyn Kelly, you said nothing.
When he promised to ban 1.3B people from coming to these shores based on their faith, you said nothing.
And now that he’s up to his armpits in snakes, suddenly you think he’s a closet liberal.
Sorry. He’s all yours. In fact, he’s YOU. And you are him. To suggest at this point in his disastrous presidency that he isn’t, is the height of cowardice. Which frankly, seems to be yet another Republican trait. (Senators Collins, McCain and Murkowski, rare exceptions).

So no my email friend, when Trump’s era ends, and it won’t end well, I won’t confine myself to “looking forward.” I’ll reflect on where we were, and how we got there. And I will never, EVER let you off the hook for your vote. I’ll hang it around your neck like one of Trump’s 4 foot long ties.

And no Joe Scarborough, the fact that Trump may have contributed money to Clinton and Schumer in the past doesn’t mean he’s at heart a Democrat. The fact is, he has no heart. And your eleventh hour renouncing of the party of racism, bigotry, greed and corruption isn’t fooling anyone. If you really wanted to stand against Trump on principle, the time to do that was two years ago—when you were giving him twelve hours of air time per month.

~Bruce Lindner~

On Facebook:

“I am not mad at you that Clinton lost. I am unconcerned that we have different politics. And I don’t think less of you because you vote one way and I vote another. No…I think less of you because you watched an adult mock a disabled person in front of a crowd and still supported him. I think less of you because you saw a man spouting clear racism and backed him. I think less of you because you listened to him advocate for war crimes, and still thought he should run this country. I think less of you because you watched him equate a woman’s worth by her appearance and got on board. It isn’t your politics that I find repulsive. It is your personal willingness to support racism, sexism, and cruelty. You sided with a bully when it mattered and that is something I will never forget. So, no…you and I won’t be “coming together” to move forward or whatever. Trump disgusts me, but it is the fact that he doesn’t disgust you that will stick with me long after this election.” ~Author Unknown~

Quote:  I still fear that Trump will not get his full comeuppance… Because metaphorically speaking, the Republicans have such a stranglehold on Justice; they can pummel it down to a size that will easily drown in a bathtub. Our country has so many ignoramuses it’s gonna take a VERY, VERY long time before we see the enlightenment at the end of the tunnel. By thethinkingblue on Facebook

Reason Won in France

I WISH ALL IN AMERICA COULD READ THIS… but alas, we are still in the grip (stranglehold) of the Republican Party who will stop at nothing to reap power… and I mean NOTHING! (Even to allowing a proven enemy to interfere in our elections) thinkingblue

It’s OK to admit it: France just gave the world hope
Excerpt: Everything Trump is not
And lo, the world did exhale. Just a little.
French media handled it all better. They did not bleat out endless fake news or tweet blatant misinformation – even merely to debunk it. They did not swarm all over the “scandalous” 9GB email dump that happened a hugely suspicious handful of hours before the election, the result of a coordinated (probably Russian) hack that targeted Emmanuel Macron.

They respected the traditional pre-election media blackout. They heeded the national rule not to publish false news. In short: The French media didn’t succumb to mania, the racist candidate didn’t encourage her followers to beat people up, the voters weren’t fazed, the polls proved accurate and the far better, more calmly intelligent candidate won.

And for a moment, all felt right in the world.

The best news of all? Despite months of icy dread, Marine Le Pen’s xenophobic, Trump-stabbed populism was crushed, quite overwhelmingly, by a 2-1 margin – though as many have pointed out, she can still claim that her party doubled its turnout percentage from when her father, another racist xenophobe, led the party. Translation: The far-right Nationalist Front is stronger than ever. So, you know, ne pas être complaisant.

There are other factors to consider. There is no Fox News equivalent in France. There are no extremist, fake-news tabloids of hate and fear, like Breitbart or Drudge, to bash lesser-educated voters into panicky compliance. There is no vicious gerrymandering of voting districts by the conservative party to give themselves easy wins, no attempts by the far-right to prevent minorities from getting to the polls or block the poor from voting.

More of this
Also, French elections are held on weekends, thus guaranteeing far stronger turnouts. In sum: France ain’t the U.S. More Here:

America Is the New ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq)

Donald Trump’s kind of justice.
Neil Gorsuch’s very first decision on the Supreme Court was to let a man be killed

Thursday evening, Neil Gorsuch — who occupies a seat on the Supreme Court that Senate Republicans held open for a year until Donald Trump could fill it — cast his first public vote since his ascension to the high Court. Hours later, a man was killed because of Gorsuch’s vote.

The case underlying that vote, McGehee v. Hutchinson, involved eight inmates that Arkansas hopes to execute in eleven days. As Justice Stephen Breyer explains in a dissenting opinion, “the reason the State decided to proceed with these eight executions is that the ‘use by’ date of the State’s execution drug is about to expire.”

In recent years, state death chambers have struggled to obtain the drugs they use to execute inmates because many drug companies refuse to sell drugs for this purpose.

The Court handed down a series of orders denying relief to some or all of these inmates Thursday night, including a 5–4 decision in which Gorsuch cast the tie-breaking vote. Shortly after the Court handed down these orders, Arkansas executed Ledell Lee, its first execution since 2005.

Lee claimed that he is innocent, and also that his attorney was drunk during his trial.

Even setting aside this specific claim by Lee — or, for that matter, the awesome moral and legal questions that weigh upon any decision to kill a human being — there is an entirely bloodless and technical reason why the Court’s decision to allow Lee’s execution to move forward is improper.

In its 2015 decision in Glossip v. Gross, a 5–4 Court effectively held that there must always be a method of execution available to a state, even if that method inflicts great pain upon an inmate. Nevertheless, Glossip at least left open the possibility that an inmate could avoid a needlessly cruel method of execution if they can demonstrate that a different method would be less painful.

As Justice Sonia Sotomayor writes in her own dissenting opinion in McGehee, she harbors “significant doubts about the wisdom of imposing the perverse requirement that inmates offer alternative methods for their own executions.” More significantly, at least as a legal matter, lower appellate have split on how to apply this “perverse requirement” to individual cases.

Thus, Sotomayor writes, “given the life-or death consequences, the Court, having imposed this requirement, should provide clarification and guidance when the Circuits are divided as to its meaning.”

The Court typically agrees to hear cases when, in the words of its own rules, “a United States court of appeals has entered a decision in conflict with the decision of another United States court of appeals on the same important matter,” so it is unusual for them to take a pass on this case.

It also used to be a common practice for the Supreme Court to grant a stay of execution whenever it agrees to hear a death penalty case — although this practice has faded under Chief Justice John Roberts — to prevent the case from being declared moot because the inmate at the heart of the case is dead.

Under the Court’s ordinary procedures, in other words, the justices would have scheduled this case for a later hearing, requested full briefing, and stayed the executions. A majority of them chose instead to allow a man to be killed.
